What is ROI?

Return on investment (ROI) measures the gain or loss on an investment relative to its cost. Net profit is the amount returned minus the amount invested, and ROI% = Net Profit ÷ Amount Invested × 100. For a fair result, include all costs in the amount invested and all gains in the amount returned. Plain ROI ignores how long the money was invested, so this calculator also shows annualized ROI — ((Returned ÷ Invested)^(1/years) − 1) × 100 — which converts the total return into an equivalent yearly rate and makes investments of different durations comparable. ROI still says nothing about risk, so weigh that separately.
